It Takes a Village

Chodagam Ammanna Raja

Earlier this week I was looking for something on the internet and did a Google search on my name. Among the results popped up a link for my late grandmother. Someone did a good job of summarizing her life in one page. It brought back memories of the significant influence she had in my formative years when I lived with her.

Working with Mahatma Gandhi in India's freedom movement, she went to jail a couple of times at a young age. Then, in independent India, she was among the first women to be elected to the parliament from the state of Andhra Pradesh, known for her integrity and championing women's rights. She was a woman who knew her purpose on this earth.

The experience of
trying to find something about myself and stumbling on grandmother's life which had a great impact on me was almost proverbial. Paraphrasing an old proverb, if you want to understand a child, you must know the village that raised it.
